Hand-werk

A collection of gouache paintings that puts the spotlights on the hands behind craftsmanship (De handen achter handwerk).

In spring 2025 I participated in a "sheep to sweaeter" event hosted by the owner of Wolatelier Tilburg. This day of spinning, knitting and community inspired me to highlight the execution of the craft itself rather than the finished object.

I noticed that people starting in fiber-arts often were focussed on the finished product. I was the same when I started. The reason I stuck with it was because I loved the action of crocheting, knitting etc. more than the result. Which to me, is the crux of craft and . A passion for the process.

Experimentation

Hand-werk was realised during my elective module Drawing & Painting at St. Joost.

At the beginning of the module I was stuck on what to do for my project. Eventually during an exercise to draw my day I painted hands, this sparked the idea to make a series of them.

These are the experiments I did before the sheep to sweater event, where I found my inspiration.
